Kitchen Chemistry is a life-relevant science-learning environment where elementary and middle school youth learn science and scientific inquiry skills through cooking. We have found Kitchen Chemistry to be an effective context for promoting the development of learning communities in which children feel comfortable engaging in scientific inquiry, making mistakes, trying new roles in science, and having fun together. Our work in KC has involved the design of social and mobile technologies to enhance interactions in the learning community. Such technologies help learners share their scientific and personal contributions, find common interests, and overcome challenges to collaborating in the physical environment.
