A primary goal of the research that I am involved in is to investigate a theoretical model known as Knowledge Community and Inquiry (KCI), where students develop shared understandings of science curricula by participating in collaborative and collective forms of learning (Slotta, 2010). KCI was partly inspired by the Knowledge Building approach, advanced by Scardamalia & Bereiter (2006), where students build on the ideas and theories of their peers using a technology environment (Knowledge Forum) that captures and dynamically displays content. We have designed and built such technologies, where students contribute to and draw from a community knowledge base that serves as an important resource for ongoing inquiry. Within our KCI approaches, we are interested in capturing and making the knowledge of individuals accessible to the knowledge community. My Master's work focused on the design and use of aggregate representations of community knowledge (Cober, 2013).
