Since 2006, I have been advancing a model of collective inquiry in science, called "knowledge Media and Learning" (KCI) - that has now been the topic of 5 doctoral studies, and several large funded projects. The core elements of the KCI model are that students work collectively (often jig-sawed into specialist groups) to create a knowledge base, which then serves as an important resource for subsequent, structured inquiry activities. KCI targets an explicit set of learning goals, with required outcomes that reflect assessable learning outcomes.
