The learning communities I study are largely online. In particular, I've been studying the Scratch website (Scratch.mit.edu - a programming website primarily for kids) for a number of years. In general I do qualitative work, but in this case I've jumped into some quant work to see broad trends of participation and programming on the site. I also do some work leveraging the Scratch site for in-person workshops or classes. I'm also involved in comparing kids DIY media websites more broadly - studying over 140 of them to see what features there are for kids, how they manage legal and policy issues, and what kinds of sharing, commenting, and community-based practices are available.
